About
The diorama box is about street food culture in Beijing. Growing up in Beijing, street food has a special place in my heart. I remember I would buy breakfast at the street food cart outside of my elementary school every other day because it's cheap, convenient and delicious. Sometimes, I would meet up with my friends there for breakfast and chat while eating before heading to class. I always enjoyed watching the food cart chef cook because he's so skills and fast. Another one of my favorite was a dessert cart that sells dates cake and comes by only on the weekend. My grandma and I loved the dessert. I always come downstairs to buy it. I still remembers the smell and warmness of the cake.
Street food micro-industries play a crucial role in the social inclusion and participation of vulnerable groups in big cities. Also, it's a place where locals hang out and grab snacks late night and chat with the restaurant owners. Unfortunately the street food culture is diminishing because of all the complicated rules, policies and licenses, I want to use the diorama to capture and document the importance of street food and how it brings out a unique culture and shows the old times (my childhood) freeze in time.
I found some street food pictures in Beijing and in the area where my elementary school is at. These images are old because street food vendors are not allowed in Beijing. I had nostalgia of my childhood looking at the images.
What I Want People to Notice
Warm and friendly human interactions
Iconic mobile food cart with red letter sign
Cozy and harmonious environment
I want to take people back in the old times when they look at the diorama box. For those who aren't familiar with the street food culture, I want them to see how simple food and eating with others and chatting can make people happy and feel the warmness.
