Big Idea Statement

The intent of the exhibit at the Holocaust Center for Humanity in Seattle is to educate people from all ages about the Holocaust, and inspire them to confront bigotry and indifference, promote human dignity, and take action. Through stories and artifacts of Washington State Holocaust survivors and their families, we want to bring the past to present and educate visitors through powerful immersive storytelling.

Exhibit Goals

  • See

    • Lightings should be warm and dim inside of the exhibit. Spot lights should be used for highlighting artifacts and important contents.

  • Do

    • Interact with the exhibit, and share ideas and engage with rest of the community

  • Learn

    • The exhibit should teach visitors about the history of Holocaust and learn how Jewish people endured the war and tried whatever they could to stay alive.

  • Feel

    • Visitors should feel emotional and motivated to take action to fight hate.

Audience

All ages are welcome, but visitors from grades six and above can learn and be inspired more from the exhibit because older kids demonstrate the ability to empathize with individual eyewitness accounts and to attempt to understand the complexities of Holocaust history, including the scope and scale of the events. While elementary age students are able to empathize with individual accounts, they often have difficulty placing them in a larger historical context. Since the exhibit will mainly about survivors in Washington State, visitors tend to be locals, and it's suitable for groups and individuals.

Possible ways to achieve the experience goals through design and execution

After creating the visitors journey map, it was easy for me to see which area can be improved. Based on the journey map, I repositioned the exhibit layout.

Does this exhibit support the museum’s mission?

Yes, the exhibit supports the museum's mission. Interactive displays of information and immersive storytelling and experiences educate visitors of all ages about the Holocaust and what Jewish people went through during the war.
